‘2 dolls kept in a tent’: Karnataka minister’s remarks on Lord Ram sparks row

Karnataka minister and Congress leader KN Rajanna triggered a controversy when he claimed that the BJP was cheating people in the name of Lord Ram and compared the deity to “two dolls kept in a tent”.

“There are Ram temples with a history dating back thousands of years. These are holy places. Now, the BJP is building temples for elections. The BJP is cheating people. I went there when Babri Masjid was demolished, they kept two dolls in a tent and called it Lord Ram,” he said.

“Back home, when we go to the Ram temple, there’s a vibration that one can feel. In Ayodhya, I felt nothing. It was like dolls in touring talkies,” the minister added.

Later, Rajanna clarified his statement and said, “I said that to you all because there were dolls kept in the tent. Now I haven’t seen what is there. Once I go, I will see and tell you what is there”.

In response, Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) president Alok Kumar said such statements came out of “frustration” and “disappointment” for the Congress leaders as they decided to skip the ‘Pran Pratishtha‘ of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya on January 22.

“Someone said that the garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum) was not built where the Babri Masjid once stood. All such statements are due to disappointment and frustration,” he said.

“The place where Lord Ram was born, that is the mark under the middle dome, is the Ram Janmabhoomi. Ram Lalla will be seated there in the sanctum sanctorum. There is no need to deviate from any kind of false propaganda,” he added.

Kumar said the Congress leaders declined to visit the Ram Temple for the consecration event due to their “arrogance”.

“The Prime Minister has been invited. The Leader of the Opposition has been invited. The BJP president and other senior leaders were also called. If everyone turned in for the event, it will be programme for all,” he said.

“It is their (Congress leaders’) arrogance because of which they have declined. But still, I would like to say that they should come,” the VHP leader further said.
