2025 Delhi Assembly Elections: Fitness influencer Rohit Dalal, Akshay Dilawari join AAP in presence of Arvind Kejriwal

With the Delhi Assembly elections closing in, fitness influencers Rohit Dalal and Akshay Dilawari, along with 70-80 other sportspersons, including wrestlers and bodybuilders, joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday at the party’s head office in Rouse Avenue. They were welcomed by party convener Arvind Kejriwal.

“They have worked to keep people fit and have represented India internationally in wrestling and sports,” said Arvind Kejriwal, adding that once his party forms the government in Delhi, it will work to resolve the issues faced by sportspersons. He also mentioned the creation of a gymnasium association and announced that several other gym owners would be joining the party in the coming days.

Praising both Rohit Dalal and Akshay Dilawari as prominent names in the fitness field who have brought India recognition on the international stage, Arvind Kejriwal emphasised that many youngsters would be inspired by them.

Rohit Dalal praised the party’s initiatives, such as free yoga classes and support for sports development, which inspired him to join. “The work done for sportspersons and gyms is commendable. I want to contribute to this mission,” he added.

Former cricketer Tilakraj, who joined the party with Rohit Dalal and Akshay Dilawari, expressed optimism about the growing involvement of the sporting fraternity in politics. “Many players from Delhi are planning to join us. We are committed to working hard and strengthening the party,” he said.

Recently, the Delhi government has focused on promoting sportspersons across many disciplines. Earlier this week, Indian gold-winning Olympiad chess player Tania Sachdev criticized the Delhi government for the “lack of recognition” of the game in the state. A day later, Chief Minister Atishi met with her, calling her an “inspiration to all budding chess players in India,” and vowed that her government would do more for the sport in the days to come.

With the state assembly elections round the corner, AAP has already announced all the candidates, while its main challenger, BJP is yet to announce any. In 2020, AAP swept the Delhi polls, winning 62 out of the 70 seats, while the BJP secured only 8 seats.
