The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Ahmedabad busted an international drug syndicate and arreted four people involved in trafficking ketamine, concealed in spice packets, from India to foreign countries. Three of the arrested are Nigerian nationals. Along with the arrests, the NCB seized two kilograms of ketamine.
Ketamine is a prescription anesthetic agent which now has also become a drug of abuse.
On December 3, the NCB Ahmedabad team received information that two kilograms of ketamine were being sent via a courier agency to the United States, concealed in packets of various spice brands. Following an investigation, the team arrested Adnan Furniturewala and three Nigerians, Emmanuel Ifeni Nwobiora, his associates Akeleme Ahmakula Joseph and Emmanuel Osaja.
Adnan Furniturewala, who had previously travelled to the US from Pune, had faced three drug trafficking cases there. After being sent back to India, he resumed drug trafficking operations in the country.
Last year, the NCB in Mumbai filed a case against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. At the time of his arrest, Adnan was out on parole and frequently changed locations to evade authorities.
Adnan was tracked down through operations in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka.
On December 8, he was arrested at an apartment in Bengaluru. Following his arrest, the NCB Ahmedabad learnt that the ketamine had been supplied to him by a Nigerian syndicate operating out of Delhi, using a courier agency to transport the drugs.
On December 18, the NCB arrested Emmanuel Ifeni Nwobiora and his associates, Akeleme Ahmakula Joseph and Emmanuel Osaja, from the Mehrauli area of Delhi. The four individuals are now in custody, and the NCB Ahmedabad is continuing its investigation to identify the primary source of the ketamine supply.
