8 Bengal labourers stripped, beaten in Odisha for ‘misbehaving’ with woman

Eight labourers from West Bengal were allegedly stripped, beaten, and paraded with their hands tied by a group of villagers in Sundargarh district of Odisha over allegations of misconduct towards a woman, police said.

According to reports, the group was attacked after a woman accused one of the labourers of forcibly entering her home and misbehaving with her. Following the accusation, members of her community caught the accused along with seven others found in the vicinity.

The mob stripped the men, tied them with ropes, and paraded them in public. They were also subjected to severe physical assault, locals said.

When the police intervened after receiving information about the incident, they faced resistance and were reportedly assaulted by the enraged crowd.

“We are examining various CCTV footage. Action will be taken against the culprits. Three FIRs have been filed by both sides, as the second party alleged that the labourers were misbehaving with a woman, which led to the confrontation and subsequent incident. The investigation is underway,” said a senior police officer.

The angry mob also allegedly threatened a journalist covering the incident.
