Gujarat: Surat teachers announce school holiday to go on vacation

A private school in Gujarat’s Surat declared an unscheduled five-day holiday for students. The reason — the teachers and management of the school wanted to go on a vacation.

The incident came to light after Aslam Firozbhai Cyclewala, the former city corporator, filed a complaint with the Surat District Education Officer.

According to Cyclewala, the administration of Mount Mary Mission Higher Secondary School sent a message to the parents of the students that the school will remain closed from January 9-14 because the teachers are going for a picnic.

The school is located in the Limbayat area of Surat city, which is largely inhabited by low-income families, said Cyclewala.

“The school management closed the school from January 9-14 for Classes 1-10. This affects nearly 1,500 students. The district education officer had no idea about this. Only after I forwarded a written complaint to the education officer, the school management, on January 10, formally applied for a leave from the education department,” Cyclewala told India Today TV.

The education department, however, refused the application and sent a notice to the school management, Cyclewala said.

The former corporator demanded action against the school management and teachers for “ruining the education of 1,500 students”.
