An event in Patna to commemorate former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was marred by ruckus when a folk singer sang the lines “Ishwar Allah tero naam (Ishwar and Allah are your names)” during her rendition of the iconic bhajan ‘Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram‘. As soon as Devi sang the lines, a section of the audience protested and started sloganeering.
As the situation escalated, singer Devi issued an apology from the stage. As the incident unfolded at Bapu Sabhagar auditorium in Patna, Union Minister Ashwini Choubey stepped in to manage the situation. He was also seen removing the folk singer from the stage.
Following the apology, chants of “Jai Shri Ram” echoed in the venue. The bhajan, closely associated with Mahatma Gandhi, harps on the message of unity.
The event, titled ‘Main Atal Rahunga‘, was organised to recall the contributions of the BJP stalwart on the occasion of his birth anniversary.
Former Bihar Chief Minister and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav hit out at the BJP, saying the party’s supporters dislike the slogan “Jai Siyaram, Jai Sitaram” because it invokes Mother Sita.
“In Patna, when a singer performed Gandhi Ji’s hymn, ‘Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram, Patit Pavan Sita Ram’, BJP allies of Nitish Kumar created an uproar. The narrow-minded and petty individuals felt their sentiments were hurt by the hymn. The singer, Devi, had to apologise,” Lalu Yadav said.
“BJP and its supporters have always been anti-women, and by using the slogan ‘Jai Shri Ram’, they also insult half the population,” the RJD supremo tweeted.
