The Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday said there was a “deafening silence” from the BJP on the IIT-BHU Varanasi sexual assault case after three of their party members were found to be the main accused.
The TMC alleged that the three BJP workers, arrested in the sexual assault case, were part of the BJP IT cell which is headed by Amit Malviya.
In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), the TMC said that the “deafening silence” from BJP leaders Amit Malviya, Suvendu Adhikari and Sukanta Majumdar on the IIT-BHU case was a “glaring display of their lack of concern for women safety”.
In addition to this, TMC’s Mahila Wing president Chandrima Bhattacharya said, “Amit Malviya should be removed from the BJP. The silence on the matter indicates complicity and suggests that every corner of the BJP supports incidents like sexual assault,”
Bhattacharya also announced plans to initiate a statewide awareness campaign to highlight the BJP’s alleged negligence in the case.
An IIT-BHU student was allegedly sexually assaulted by three men on November 1, 2023.
The victim had gone out of her hostel with a friend on the night of November 1. She was stopped by three men on a motorcycle, who forcibly took her to a corner and gagged her after separating her from her friend.
The accused then allegedly stripped the woman, made videos and clicked photos, the woman said in her complaint.
Meanwhile, the TMC also responded to the BJP’s allegations of failed law and order in the state after three sadhus were attacked in Purulia after they were suspected of being kidnappers.
TMC leader Shashi Panja highlighted the West Bengal Police’s swift action in the case, saying, “Cops immediately came to the spot and everyone was taken to the police station. At least 12 people have already been arrested in the case and the police are looking into it.”
