Bengaluru Police raids illegal bookie counters at Bangalore Turf Club, 66 arrested

As many as 66 people were arrested, and Rs 3.4 crore in cash was seized by the Bengaluru Police after they raided illegal bookie counters at the Bangalore Turf Club (BTC), a prominent horse racing club in the city.

The raids were carried out based on a complaint alleging irregularities and inflated ticket amounts from visitors of the club, and the police stated that the raids exposed an illegal betting racket.

The officials alleged that the accused were operating through the bookie stalls, claiming to be licence holders and running the betting racket illegally at BTC located at Race Course Road.

“The operation targeted individuals who, without any official licence, were illegally collecting money from the public/punters under the guise of being legal bookies for the Turf Club. These individuals were conducting unauthorised horse race betting activities parallel to the Bangalore Turf Club, without displaying government orders at their stalls, maintaining proper accounts, or managing appropriate records for the money collected from customers,” the police said in a statement.

There were no records of the accused having legal bookies, and they were allegedly avoiding taxes, the police added.

Around 8 bookies have escaped, and the police have started a hunt for them. A case has been registered and the investigation is underway, officials said.
