Akhilesh Yadav stubborn on 3 seats, deal with Congress not finalised yet, say sources

The Congress and the Samajwadi Party failed to reach an agreement on their seat-sharing talks late on Monday. Further, as per Akhilesh Yadav’s earlier statement, he would not join Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, sources said.

“Once the seat allocation is finalised, the Samajwadi Party will join the Congress’ Nyay Yatra,” Akhilesh Yadav had previously said.

Sources also said Akhilesh Yadav was not ready to give up the Moradabad seat to the Congress. Rahul Gandhi’s party also demanded the Bijnor seat from Akhilesh, which the Samajwadi Party refused.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Samajwadi Party won the Moradabad seat. In the mayor’s election in Moradabad, the Congress ended up in second spot and lost by a few thousand votes.

The Congress also wants the Ballia seat, considered one of the strongholds of the Samajwadi Party, for its state president Ajay Rai.

On Monday, the Samajwadi Party offered 17 Lok Sabha seats to Congress in Uttar Pradesh. It also declared 11 more candidates from Uttar Pradesh for the upcoming general elections, including don-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari’s brother and BSP MP Afzal Ansari.

On January 30, the Samajwadi Party had announced its first list of candidates for 16 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh.

Both the Congress and the Samajwadi Party are partners in the opposition INDIA bloc.
