‘Anyone can contest polls’: Supriya Sule on potential battle with sister-in-law

Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule on Sunday reacted to the speculation that the wife of her cousin and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar might be fielded against her for the Baramati seat and said it will not be a “family fight”.

Speaking to ANI news agency, Sule said, “How can this be a family fight? Anyone can contest elections in a democracy. I had also said yesterday that if they have a strong candidate like me, then I am ready to talk to that candidate. Whatever topic, time, or place they decide, I am ready to sit and discuss.”

The speculation about the possibility of Ajit Pawar’s wife Sumetra Pawar contesting elections from Baramati for the Lok Sabha polls intensified after a vehicle with the posters of the couple was seen in the constituency. Ajit Pawar had also hinted at fielding a candidate against Supriya Sule.

Ajit Pawar’s faction recently gained legitimacy after the Election Commission ruled that the party under his leadership is the “real Nationalist Congress Party”.

The Baramati seat has been a bastion of the Pawar family and Supriya Sule for over five decades. Sule has represented the constituency three consecutive times since 2009.

Sharad Pawar won the Lok Sabha polls from Baramati in 1984, 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2004. He also won the Maharashtra Assembly polls from the same constituency multiple times.

When asked about the potential battle with Sunetra Pawar, Supriya Sule said, “What does it have to do with family? Why are you dragging my family in politics? I request you not to drag my family in this. My family is very big and has nothing to do with politicsâ€æIt will be a battle on ideological lines. They have not made any ideological clarity. Why bring bhaabhi into this? What does she have to do with all of this?”

Sunetra Pawar is known for her social work in Baramati and runs an NGO, Environmental Forum of India. She is the sister of Padamsinh Patil, a former minister and once Sharad Pawar’s closest aide.

She also serves as a trustee of the popular educational institution Vidya Pratishthan.

Sunetra Pawar has also been part of the think tank of the World Entrepreneurship Forum in France since 2011.
