Bangladeshi Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das’s lawyer, Rabindranath Ghosh, has been admitted to Kolkata’s Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial (SSKM) Hospital after experiencing sudden chest pain at his son’s house in Barrackpore.
The lawyer’s hospitalisation comes ahead of the scheduled hearing of Krishna Das’s case at the Chittagong High Court in Bangladesh on Thursday.
The 88-year-old was rushed to the hospital around midnight on Tuesday. Ghosh had arrived in India in the second week of December and was staying with his son in Barrackpore for medical treatment.
On Tuesday, Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh visited him at his residence in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district. Shortly after the visit, the lawyer left his son’s house and began feeling unwell and later hospitalised.
Chinmoy Krishna Das, a spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote, was arrested earlier this month at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport while en route to Chattogram for a rally. He was denied bail and remanded in custody until January 2 by a Bangladeshi court.
Rabindranath Ghosh has been actively defending the arrested monk and advocating for the rights of Hindus in Bangladesh.
Speaking to reporters, the lawyer said that he had written to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to raise the issue of atrocities and persecution faced by minority leaders in Bangladesh with the country’s interim government.
“The interim government in Bangladesh has no right to reject any policy decision taken by the previous democratically elected government,” the Bangladeshi lawyer said.
On the potential risks involved in his work, he said, “Since I am defending Chinmoy Das Prabhu, I am aware that false cases could be filed against me, and there is also a threat to my life,” he had said earlier.
The Hindus in Bangladesh have been facing increased vulnerability amidst the ongoing political turmoil.
