BJP workers clash with police in Bengal’s Sandeshkhali, cops resort to lathicharge

A clash broke out between police and workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in riot-hit Sandeshkhali on Tuesday after tensions escalated during a protest against the alleged sexual harassment of women by leader Shajahan Sheikh and his aides.

The situation turned tense as BJP supporters, marching towards the Superintendent of Police office, reportedly broke through barricades, leading to a significant disturbance in the area.

In response to the escalating tensions, police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the crowd.

According to sources, several women supporters of the BJP sustained injuries during the clashes. Police had to use tear gas after protesters started throwing stones at them.

Notably, Prohibitory orders were clamped in West Bengal’s Basirhat in view of a proposed agitation programme by the BJP.
