BJP’s Rahul Narvekar re-elected unopposed as Maharashtra Assembly Speaker

BJP leader Rahul Narvekar was elected unopposed as the Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Monday. The 47-year-old MLA from Colaba had also served as the Speaker under the Eknath Shinde government.

Rahul Narwekar, a prominent figure in Maharashtra politics, is a lawyer by profession. He became an MLA for the first time in 2019 and was re-elected this time by defeating Congress candidate Heera Nawaji Devasi with a margin of over 48,500 votes.

Rahul Narwekar has previously been associated with the Shiv Sena and the NCP. He also served as the spokesperson of the Shiv Sena Youth Wing. In 2014, while still with the Shiv Sena, he sought to contest the Lok Sabha elections but was denied a ticket.

Narwekar comes from a political family; his father, Suresh Narwekar, was a councillor. Ramraje Naik-Nimbalkar, a legislator from the NCP and the chairman and speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, is his father-in-law.

After spending 15 years with the Shiv Sena, Narwekar left the party in 2014 when he was denied a ticket for the Lok Sabha elections. He then joined the NCP, which fielded him from the Maval Lok Sabha constituency. However, he faced defeat in that election. Later, he joined the BJP.
