A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against the organisers of a lavish birthday celebration held near the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Pune on December 8. The event, hosted by Balaji Rao, owner of the Venky’s Group of Companies, featured star performers Shankar Mahadevan, Akon, and Whigfield. However, Rao and the artists have been exempted from legal action.
The celebration, marking Rao’s birthday, turned controversial after complaints from residents of Bavdhan and neighbouring areas about excessive noise and bright LED lights disrupting their lives. Over 100 residents gathered at the Bavdhan police station to demand action against the disturbance, which reportedly lasted through the night.
The FIR was registered based on a constable’s complaint against Adinath Sambhaji Mate, who was listed as the organiser.
The allegations include violations of Sections 292 and 293 of the BNS, the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000, the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, and the Maharashtra Police Act, 1951.
Residents allege that the party lasted until dawn, causing immense disturbance. Social media posts and Instagram stories from attendees indicate that performances continued until 5.30 am. However, the police FIR claims the event ended by 2.30 am.
Despite repeated complaints from the public, Pimpri-Chinchwad Police reportedly failed to take immediate action to curb the loud music and flashing lights.
According to the police, Mate had organised the private event, which blatantly violated noise pollution regulations. The complaint highlights how loud music and eye-straining LED lights disrupted the lives of residents in Bavdhan, Baner, Pashan, and surrounding areas.
Reports indicate that Mate had secured permission from the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police for the event. However, the apparent violations have raised concerns about the enforcement of noise pollution laws and potential leniency granted to high-profile individuals.
The exclusive bash drew attention for its star-studded lineup, with Shankar Mahadevan and his son Shivam performing alongside Danish singer Whigfield and international artist Akon. While the performances captivated attendees, the surrounding communities were left disturbed.
