Chandigarh Mayor may resign before Supreme Court hearing on mayoral polls: Sources

The Mayor of Chandigarh will likely resign before Supreme Court’s hearing on the mayoral poll tampering case, sources said.

Sources also said that three councillors, two from the AAP and one from the Congress, will likely join the BJP.

The BJP swept the Chandigarh mayoral polls held on January 30, with Manoj Sonkar of the BJP getting 16 votes against AAP’s Kuldeep Kumar. Eight votes were declared invalid in the elections.

The AAP-Congress coalition had accused Presiding Officer Anil Masih of tampering the ballot papers and helping the BJP win the elections.

The AAP candidate Kuldeep Kumar had filed a petition in the Supreme Court, challenging a Punjab and Haryana High Court order, which had refused to grant any interim relief to their application seeking fresh elections under the supervision of a retired judge.
