Congress finalises seat-sharing deal with DMK for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry

Congress finalised its seat-sharing deal with the DMK for the Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, announced the party’s general secretary KC Venugopal on Saturday. As per the deal, Congress will contest nine seats in Tamil Nadu and the lone seat in Puducherry.

The seat-sharing formula for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections remains unchanged from the agreement the two parties reached in 2019. In the 2019 general elections, the DMK-led alliance won 38 of the 39 Lok Sabha seats.

Congress bagged eight of the nine seats it contested then.

KC Venugopal on Saturday said Congress will support the candidates fielded by its allies in the remaining 30 seats.

“DMK and Congress will fight together, go together and win together,” said Venugopal. He expressed confidence that the candidates fielded by the alliance would win all 40 seats.

The Congress leader attacked the central government and alleged that it was “attacking” the states ruled by opposition parties.

“Under the leadership of Chief Minister MK Stalin, Tamil Nadu is fighting against the divisive forces of the country, and the anti-federal attitude of the union government. We are all aware of how the union government is attacking opposition-ruled states,” said Venugopal.

He further alleged that the BJP was trying to attack the pride of Tamil Nadu and added, “It’s important to fight the divisive, anti-people politics of the BJP.”

The seat-sharing agreement came on the day that Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) joined the DMK-led alliance for campaigning in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The actor said his party will not contest the polls but will extend its support to the alliance.

Last month, the ruling DMK allotted two Lok Sabha seats each to the CPI and CPI (M).
