Customs officers at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport seized gold, narcotics, and foreign currency during operations conducted on January 9 and 10. Six passengers were arrested in connection with the cases.
In one case, officers intercepted a passenger arriving from Ras Al-Khaimah and two passengers from Bangkok. Gold weighing 1.257 kilograms, valued at Rs 91.43 lakh, was recovered. According to officials, the gold was concealed in the body cavity of one passenger and hidden inside socks and shoes worn by the others. One person was arrested under the Customs Act, 1962.
In another operation, three passengers arriving from Bangkok were intercepted based on profiling. Customs officials recovered 11.918 kilograms of suspected hydroponic marijuana. The substance, valued at Rs 11.918 crore, was concealed in double-layered plastic packets inside trolley bags. All three passengers were arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
In a separate case, two passengers from Bangkok were caught with 18.442 kilograms of suspected hydroponic marijuana. The substance, valued at Rs 18.442 crore, was concealed in a similar manner in trolley bags. Both individuals were arrested under the same provisions of the NDPS Act.
Customs officers also intercepted two passengers departing from Mumbai to Dubai. During the search, foreign currency equivalent to Rs 17.46 lakh was recovered.
Investigations into all cases are ongoing.
