A nine-year-old Dalit boy was brutally assaulted on Sunday after being accused of scribbling on a car’s dust-covered window. Two men who tried to intervene were stabbed in the altercation, leading to widespread outrage and protests. The accused, identified as 26-year-old Mohan, has since been arrested.
The incident occurred when the boy, a fourth-standard student, was stopped by Mohan and dragged inside his house, where he, along with two other boys, was severely beaten. According to the victim, Mohan tied him up and thrashed him while accusing the children of defacing his car.
“I was coming back home after getting a sundal (South Indian dish) when he stopped me and dragged me inside. He then tied me up, started beating another boy and let him go. I was again beaten up,” the child recounted.
The boy’s mother, Sudha, heard his screams and rushed to Mohan’s house. She alleged that when she confronted Mohan, he attacked her as well. Two individuals, Selvaraj and Karuppathal, who attempted to stop the assault, claimed they were stabbed by Mohan during the confrontation. Both are currently undergoing treatment at Avinashi Government Hospital along with the boy.
“My son had gone to the temple, and while he was returning, he was stopped and taken inside, accused of scribbling on the car, and beaten up. When I went to question him, I was also attacked,” Sudha said.
The incident has sparked protests by the boy’s relatives and community members outside the Cheyur Police Station. Protesters have demanded that Mohan be charged under the Prevention of Atrocities against SC/ST Act.
The Cheyur police have initiated an investigation into the case, and Mohan has been taken into custody. Further developments are awaited as public outcry grows over the incident.
