A thick layer of smog blanketed Delhi on Thursday morning, as the air quality index reached 411 at 7 am, falling into the “severe” category. The air quality index, which was registered under the “severe plus” category on Wednesday, has shown a slight improvement today. As winter is tightening its grip, major cities across the country are recording the air quality in the “poor” and “moderate” categories, indicating potential health concerns for residents.
As of Thursday morning, five major cities recorded “poor” air quality, eight fell into the “moderate” category, one was rated “satisfactory,” and only two were in the “good” category, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board.
Delhi registered the highest pollution levels in the country today, followed by Jaipur and Chandigarh with AQI readings of 235 and 233, both categorised as “poor.”
Aizawl and Guwahati had the lowest pollution levels, with AQI readings of 32 and 42 at 7 am.
