Delhi water bill issue: AAP to protest against inflated bills, accuses BJP of halting settlement scheme

Accusing the BJP of stalling the Arvind Kejriwal Government’s ‘one-time settlement scheme’ through officers, the Aam Admi Party (AAP) announced on Sunday that it would protest across Delhi against the inflated water bills in the national capital.

“We will reach out to people of Delhi… We will protest throughout Delhi on this matter. Under no circumstances will we allow injustice to be done to Delhiites. We will continue to work for the people of Delhi,” party’s Rajya Sabha MP and national general secretary (organisation) Sandeep Pathak announced in a meeting on Sunday.

The AAP alleges that the BJP is obstructing the scheme through administrative channels.

“This is not the first time that a scheme benefiting Delhiites has been stopped. The BJP has consistently halted schemes that benefit the people of Delhi. Essentially, the BJP wants to discredit the AAP by obstructing the work of Delhi residents. The BJP continues to plot various conspiracies to defame the AAP,” Pathak said.

The one-time settlement scheme for redressing faulty water bills hit a roadblock recently, with the urban development secretary refusing to present the proposal before the Council of Ministers.

AAP alleges that this interference comes amidst pressure from the Lieutenant Governor (LG) and the Central Government.

Cabinet Minister Gopal Rai added that “efforts are being made through officials of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to halt the Delhi government.”

“Today, the government is being stopped, and the wrong bills of the people are being forcefully imposed upon them. Thousands of rupees, not just hundreds, are being billed to the people of Delhi for water. The AAP is the party that protested on the streets regarding rising electricity bills. Now we will protest again against this dictatorship of the BJP,” he added.

Senior AAP leader and Minister Atishi also asserted that the issue of skyrocketing water bills in Delhi is the most burning issue for the people.

The meeting convened by the party at the Civic Centre on Sunday to discuss the course of action was attended by AAP ministers, MLAs, councillors, and party office bearers.
