India’s Under-19 World Cup winning captain Unmukt Chand is all set to play against the senior national men’s team in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. The mega event that kicks off on June 1 in United States is set to witness one of the rare moments where a player will be playing against his former national team. Chand, who retired from Indian cricket in 2021, will qualify to play for the United States cricket team in March this year. He said that he is keen to test himself against a team like India.

“Something which would be very strange (laughs), but I think since I’ve retired from India, my next goal was always to sort of play against India, and not in any bad blood but keen to test myself out against the best team in the world,” Chand told Cricbuzz.

Meanwhile, Harmeet Singh and Smit Patel, both of who were also part of the 2012 World Cup where Unkukt led the side to the title, will also be seen playing against India at the world event in June. Both Harmeet and Smit have already qualified to play for USA.

Unmukt Chand is the first Indian player to play in the Big Bash League (BBL). He achieved the feat as he made his debut for the Melbourne Renegades against Hobart Hurricanes in January 2022.

Chand, 28, had called time on his playing career in India last year. He represented three IPL franchises – Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians, and Rajasthan Royals – and had a domestic career spanning more than a decade, including 67 first-class matches.

Chand burst onto the international stage as a teenager in the 2012 ICC U19 World Cup – played in Australia.

He was the player of the match as India won the tournament final, scoring an unbeaten 111 against an Australian side featuring a host of now-BBL stars, including the likes of Travis Head and Ashton Turner.
