A significant farmers’ protest, dubbed ‘Delhi Chalo 2.0’, erupted in the Delhi-NCR region as thousands of farmers from Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh converged on the national capital on February 13.
This movement is a resurgence of the protests from two years prior, with farmers demanding a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for their crops. The day was marked by heightened tensions and clashes with law enforcement. The police resorted to firing tear gas to disperse the protesting farmers attempting to march into Delhi, leading to chaotic scenes at the borders.
The government, keen on preventing a repeat of the prolonged 2020-21 demonstrations, had heavily barricaded entry points into the city and deployed stringent security measures. Despite these efforts, the farmers, continued their march towards the capital, resulting in disturbances and an atmosphere of unrest at key junctures like the Shambhu border between Punjab and Haryana.
