Haveri gang rape-moral policing case: Karnataka Police arrest 2 more accused


The Karnataka Police on Sunday arrested two more men in connection with the Haveri gang rape-moral policing case.

The two arrested men have been identified as Imran Bashir Zakinakatti and Rehan Mohammad Hussain Walekar. According to the police, one of the accused was arrested from Bankapur, while the other was arrested from the Davangere area.

With the latest apprehensions, the police have so far arrested six people in the case.

CASE BACKGROUND

A woman in Karnataka’s Haveli district on Sunday, January 7, complained to the police that she was allegedly gang-raped by a few men when she was staying in a hotel with her partner.

According to the woman, the accused dragged her from the room and took her near a river where they thrashed her. She further alleged that the men took turns raping her and afterwards they took her to the city in a car and the driver also raped her.

In her complaint, the woman also accused the men of verbally abusing and thrashing her and her partner in the hotel room before gang-raping her.

After the complaint, the police registered a case against the accused under Section 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (punishment for rioting), 448 (house-trespass), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 354 (outraging a woman’s modesty), 354(b) (compelling a woman to be naked), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and have arrested six people in the case till the publishing of this news report.

Further investigation in the case is underway.
