Schools in Chennai and 10 other Tamil Nadu districts have declared today, December 12, holiday due to heavy rain forecast. In Puducherry and Karaikal, both schools and colleges have been shut in view of the orange alert in the union territory.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heavy rainfall warning for Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh due to a “well-marked low-pressure area” over the southwest Bay of Bengal that was first observed on December 7.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, in a tweet predicted “widespread light to moderate spells of rain in Thiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram districts, with a short heavy spell likely over south Chennai.”
With an orange alert, the RMC predicted isolated rain at a few places in the 11 Tamil Nadu districts which declared holiday for schools, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal.
Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea from December 11 to 13.
In a separate bulletin, the IMD said that the Low Pressure Area on December 9 over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining east Equatorial Indian Ocean had become more marked and was laid as a “well-marked low pressure area.”
“The associated upper air cyclonic circulation extends up to mid-tropospheric levels. The system is very likely to continue to move west-northwestwards towards Sri Lanka-Tamil Nadu coasts during the next 24 hours,” the update stated.
