‘Ignorant’: Vice President’s veiled jibe at Congress amid Ram Mandir invite row

Amid the controversy surrounding Congress’s decision to decline the invitation to attend the consecration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar took a veiled jibe at the grand old party and said that those who claim Lord Ram is an imaginary character are ‘ignorant’ of history.

“I feel very pained, I do not criticise anyone; they are ignorant, ignorant of history when someone gives an affidavit that Ram is imaginary,” the Vice President said.

He also emphasised that the concept of Ram Rajya has been given the utmost importance in the Constitution by its framers.

“When I received an invitation regarding the Ram temple, I had to publicly state that the idea of Ram, the concept of Ram-Rajya, is enshrined in the Constitution of India. The depiction of Ram, Lakshman, and Sita can be found amongst the more than twenty pictures in the Constitution, specifically above the section on fundamental rights. It is in the Constitution,” Vice President Dhankhar while attending an event in Jaipur.

He added, “They are disrespecting the makers of our Constitution, who have thoughtfully and judiciously placed those pictures there.”

The Congress party, on Wednesday, declined the invitation to attend the January 22 consecration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, stating that the event has become a political one by the RSS and BJP and not a religious ceremony.

“Lord Ram is worshipped by millions in our country. Religion is a personal matter. But the RSS/BJP have long made a political project of the temple in Ayodhya. The inauguration of the incomplete temple by the leaders of the BJP and the RSS has been obviously brought forward for electoral gain,” a statement by the party said.

A war of words followed Congress’s announcement, with the BJP labelling the grand old party as an ‘anti-Ram’ outfit.
