The indigenously developed Indian Light Tank (ILT) has achieved a “major milestone” by successfully firing a number of rounds at different ranges at an altitude of over 4,200 meters with consistent accuracy, the defence ministry said on Thursday.
The highly versatile 25-tonne class Light Tank, developed by the Chennai-based Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is designed to enhance the Army’s combat capabilities in high-altitude regions, including along the Chinese border.
Thursday’s trial followed a Phase I trial in a desert environment in September 2024. The design and development of the tank for high-altitude deployment was completed in just three years, from conceptualisation to demonstration.
The ILT’s airlift capability was also demonstrated by the Indian Air Force, which would facilitate the rapid deployment of the Light Tank in remote and inaccessible areas where transportation by road or rail is not feasible.
Following these two phases of internal performance trials, actively supported by the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force, the ILT will undergo additional trials before being offered for user trials, officials added.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force, and L&T on the successful high-altitude trials of the Light Tank.
The Army is looking at deploying over 350 light tanks, mostly in the mountainous border areas.
