Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren agrees to record statement with probe agency ED in money laundering case

Jharkhand Chief Minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) chief Hemant Soren has finally agreed to record his statement with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with its probe into a money laundering case, sources told India Today TV.

Soren gave his consent to attend the questioning days after the probe agency summoned him for the eighth time, urging him to appear at the CM secretariat (CM House) on the specified date.

“This move follows a recent strong communication from the ED to Soren, instructing him to record his statement between January 16 and January 20,” sources said.

The probe agency, sources said, also told Soren that in case of his inability to visit the ED office, the agency expressed its willingness to visit the Chief Minister at his residence in Ranchi.

However, it clarified that the responsibility for maintaining law and order during the proceedings would rest with the state government.

Soren, the 48-year-old executive president of JMM, had skipped seven earlier summonses by the ED and accused the BJP-led government at the Centre of using central agencies to destabilise his government.

Earlier this month, the probe agency had even raided the premises of Soren’s press advisor, officials of Sahibganj district and a former MLA as part of a money laundering probe into alleged illegal mining in the state.

The agency, since 2022, has been probing a trail of Rs 100 crore of “proceeds of crime” generated from illegal mining operations in the state.
