Kannur man found alive hours after being declared dead by Mangaluru’s private hospital – Kerala News

A 67-year-old man from Kerala’s Kannur, who was declared dead by a private hospital in Mangaluru in Karnataka, was discovered to be alive at a mortuary in Kannur late on Monday night.

The man, identified as Velluvakkandi Pavithran from Pachapoika in Kannur, was admitted to the Mangaluru hospital earlier in the day for treatment of paralysis and respiratory issues. Despite being placed on a ventilator, his condition worsened, prompting the hospital to inform his family that life support would be withdrawn due to a lack of improvement. By evening, the hospital declared him dead, and arrangements were made to transport his body back home.

His body was sent to Kannur in an ambulance at around 6.30 pm. However, given the late time, the family decided to place the body in the mortuary at AKG Hospital in Kannur. At approximately 11.30 pm, as the body was being moved into the morgue, Jayan, an attendant on duty, noticed something unusual.

“When the ambulance was opened, I felt like his hand was moving,” Jayan recounted. “I informed Anoop, the man who opens the mortuary, and said I had a doubt. When we touched him, we felt a pulse. His family insisted he had been declared dead hours earlier, but we decided to take him to Casualty.”

The medical team at AKG Hospital swiftly intervened and confirmed that Pavithran was alive. He was immediately shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for further treatment, and doctors later reported that he even responded to his name.

The incident left Pavithran’s family and hospital staff in shock. The doctors at AKG Hospital are closely monitoring his condition, while questions arise about the accuracy of the death confirmation made by the private hospital in Mangaluru.
