Karnataka sex scandal: Prajwal Revanna seeks anticipatory bail ahead of his likely return to India

Suspended JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna, who is facing sexual abuse charges, on Wednesday approached a Bengaluru court seeking anticipatory bail. Revanna, who has been absconding since the sex tape scandal broke out last month, is expected to return to India from Germany on Friday, May 31.

The 36-year-old MP from Hassan left the country after the second phase of polling on April 26 after multiple explicit videos allegedly involving him surfaced. Subsequently, cases were filed against Prajwal Revanna.

On Monday, Prajwal Revanna released a video message saying he would be returning to India on May 31 and will join the probe before the Special Investigation Team (SIT).

The SIT is preparing to arrest Prajwal upon his arrival at Bengaluru Airport. Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said today that he will be arrested as soon as he arrives at the airport.

“All necessary measures have to be taken, as a warrant has been issued against him (Prajwal). He has to be arrested. The SIT is waiting, they will arrest him and will take his statement, and their (SIT) process will start… A warrant has been issued. So he will have to be arrested,” the minister said.

According to official sources, Prajwal booked a flight ticket to Bengaluru from Munich on May 30 and is expected to land in the city in the early hours of May 31.

Prajwal Revanna, who is the NDA candidate from the Hassan Lok Sabha seat, is facing charges of sexually abusing multiple women.

He left the country as the scandal broke out. Subsequently, a ‘Blue Corner Notice’ seeking information on his whereabouts was issued by Interpol, via the CBI.

A Special Court for Elected Representatives issued an arrest warrant on May 18 against him, following an application moved by the SIT.

The Karnataka government also wrote to the Centre to revoke his diplomatic passport.

Prajwal’s father and Karnataka MLA HD Revanna is also facing two cases — one of sexual harassment and another of abduction. He has been granted bail in both cases.
