Amid protests against the arrest of Kerala Youth Congress President Rahul Mamkootathil, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Kerala VD Satheesan on Saturday alleged that a girl was “brutally attacked” by the police during the protest, led by youth Congress workers, in Kannur on Friday.
“Kerala Police as an instrument of the Kerala government has been doing injustice and brutality towards the youngsters of the state. Yesterday in Kannur, a young girl was brutally attacked by the police. This was at the request of CM,” Congress’s Satheesan said as quoted by news agency ANI.
The Congress leader’s allegations were in response to police using water cannon to disperse Youth Congress workers, who were protesting against the arrest of Mamkootathil.
Youth Congress Ernakulam District Committee on Saturday led a protest march to the police commissioner’s office demanding the release of Mamkoottathil.
Kerala Youth Congress President Rahul Mamkootathil was arrested for allegedly leading the violent attacks during a recent march to the state secretariat.
A local court in Thiruvananthapuram has sent Mamkootathil to judicial custody till January 22.
The Youth Congress, during their march to Kerala secretariat on December 20 allegedly attacked police and destroyed public property, police said. Congress leader Satheesan and Congress MLA Shafi Parambil were also accused in connection with the violence during the march.
“Besides the MLA, the case was registered against 150 activists of the Youth Congress workers. They were charged with offences under bailable sections,” a senior police officer said as quoted by PTI.
The protest was organised to highlight alleged atrocities against Youth Congress workers during the state government’s Nava Kerala Sadas programme led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
