A 21-year-old youth was arrested on Friday by the Kochi Cyber Crime Police for allegedly circulating a pirated copy of the recently released Malayalam action thriller “Marco”. The movie, directed by Haneef Adeni, hit theaters on December 20 and stars Unni Mukundan in the lead role.
The arrest was made following a complaint filed by the film’s producer, Sherif Mohammed, on Thursday. Mohammed claimed that a pirated version of “Marco” was being distributed on social media, which could result in significant financial losses for the film’s production team. According to the police, the accused, a native of Aluva, shared a link to the pirated version of the film on Instagram.
Sherif Mohammed provided police with details of the social media accounts involved in the illegal distribution of the film, which helped authorities track down the accused. The police have since arrested the youth and are investigating further.
This arrest follows a similar case earlier this month, where the Kochi Cyber Police apprehended three individuals for distributing a pirated version of the film “ARM”. Authorities have vowed to take strict action against such violations in the future to protect the intellectual property rights of filmmakers.
