The Kolkata Police on Tuesday filed a case against unknown people for allegedly raising “Kashmir Mange Azadi” (Kashmir wants freedom) slogans at a rally that was organised in protest against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical Centre and Hospital.
The police FIR came after a purported video from the rally went viral on social media in which some unidentified people were heard raising controversial slogans such as “Kashmir manage Azadi”.
The case has been filed under Sections 152 (related to actions that threaten the sovereignty, unity, or integrity of India) and 285 (related to the safety of people in public places such as public roads) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).
The rally was organised in the Jadavpur area of Kolkata seeking justice for the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered on August 9. The incident sparked a wave of protests by healthcare professionals across India, demanding guidelines for their safety at workplaces.
The police have also scanned the CCTV footage of the spot to identify the people who chanted the slogans. According to sources, the organisers of the rally are also likely to be summoned by the Kolkata Police, sources informed India Today TV.
TRINAMOOL CONDEMNS INCIDENT
The Trinamool Congress has condemned the purported video, saying that Kashmir was an internal part of India.
Party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh, while speaking to news agency ANI, said, “We are not supporting this. We are opposing and condemning this. This is a democratic state. Everyone here has the right to agitate. But it doesn’t mean you will raise slogans of ‘Kashmir mange Azadi’. Kashmir is a part of India. It is ours. We condemn this separatist approach amid the RG Kar issue.”
