Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, during the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in Belagavi on Thursday, launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah over controversial remarks made by Shah about Dr BR Ambedkar.
Kharge criticised the government’s refusal to acknowledge Shah’s “extremely insulting” statement on Ambedkar, the architect of India’s Constitution, and vowed that the party would fight to uphold Ambedkar’s dignity.
Kharge, addressing the ‘Nav Satyagraha Baithak’ , marking the 100 years of Mahatma Gandhi’s presidency of the Congress, also highlighted the alleged manipulation of constitutional institutions. He pointed to growing concerns over the Election Commission’s impartiality, citing recent rule changes that were seen as an attempt to conceal information mandated by the courts.
“The faith in the electoral process is diminishing,” Kharge remarked. “We have seen inconsistencies in voter lists, last-minute changes, and unexplained jumps in voting percentages. Yet, no satisfactory answers are being provided.”
Turning to Shah’s remarks about Ambedkar, Kharge expressed outrage at the government’s defense of the Home Minister. “Despite nationwide protests, the Prime Minister and the government have not accepted their mistake. Instead, they issued a defense for Shah’s objectionable statement,” he said. “This is the government’s attitude towards the Constitution and its maker.”
Kharge further accused the ruling dispensation of filing a false case against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after he raised objections to Shah’s comments, accusing them of undermining the Constitution’s spirit.
Despite facing what he described as a government that “takes the help of falsehood,” Kharge assured that the Congress would not back down. “We will fight till the last breath for the ideology of Nehru-Gandhi and the respect of Babasaheb Ambedkar,” he asserted.
Kharge also outlined plans for the Congress party’s organisational strengthening in the lead-up to 2025. He promised to fill vacant positions within the party, implement the Udaipur Declaration fully, and equip the party with the tools necessary to win elections at all levels. He emphasised the importance of recruiting ideologically committed individuals who are ready to fight for the Constitution.
“We will bring in new leadership, nurture local talent, and offer concrete strategies to win elections. Hard work alone is not enough,” Kharge said.
He also expressed confidence that the Congress would emerge stronger, with a renewed message from Belgavi, underscoring the need to protect the truth and Constitution against those who spread lies.
