Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Saturday said that police will file an first information report (FIR) against a Churachandpur leader for allegedly inciting violence in the district that left two dead and many injured.
Speaking at his official bungalow in the state capital, Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced a magisterial enquiry into the arm-snatching incident at Chingarel Tejpur in Imphal East district and violence in Churachandpur.
The leader, whose identity was not disclosed by N Biren Singh, had posted a controversial statement on X (formerly known as Twitter) barely hours before the recent violence broke out in Churachandpur on February 15.
Furthermore, Singh also denounced the threatening demands made by the Churachandpur district-based Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) towards the district administration.
“We’ve already registered FIRs against the ITLF. They cannot threaten our DCs or SPs, or any (government) employees. Who are they? The whole state and nation are behind the DC and SP of Churachandpur and others who are performing their duties,” he said.
Biren Singh also stressed that legal action has been initiated against an individual who issued threats to the Churachandpur SP on social media.
“Threats to the SP to leave the district within 24 hours and a social media post by a person to kill him will not be tolerated. The government does not take such threats easily. An FIR has been lodged against one Hauzel for his social media post asking to kill the SP,” he added.
He criticised divisive politics and vowed to take action against those attempting to misguide the youth.
Singh also questioned the motive behind the violence in Churachandpur, suggesting a hidden agenda, but assured that government records were safe.
The Chief Minister rejected the claims of establishing buffer zones within the violence-hit state, asserting that all areas are accessible for state forces to conduct operations.
Tension prevailed in Churachandpur town days after two people were killed in a clash with security forces when a mob barged into the mini-secretariat to protest the suspension of a constable. Forty-two people were also injured during the clash.
