National Investigation Agency raids in 5 states tied to Jaish-e-Mohammad radicalisation case, protests in Uttar Pradesh

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday raided 19 locations in Assam, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh in connection with an investigation into the banned outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) conspiring to radicalise people and spread terrorist propaganda in the country.

Raids in Jammu and Kashmir included locations in Anantnag’s Bamzoo Mattan area, Kreeri in Baramulla and Khansahib in Budgam.

Meanwhile, in Gujarat, NIA officials in collaboration with the Ahmedabad Rural Police, searched the home Adil Vepari, a member of an online radical outfit, in Sanand town. Vepara allegedly works at a madarsa in Chekhala village, Banas Kantha district.

Protests erupted in Jhansi as raids took place at the residence of local cleric, Mufti Khalid.

He tried to persuade the crowd by telling them that the NIA team was only doing their job as per the law and there was nothing to be worried about.

During today’s raids, NIA teams recovered incriminating documents, including pamphlets and magazines, as well as electronic devices, news agency ANI reported.

Several suspects were also rounded up for questioning in connection to the case.

The anti-terror agency said the suspects were engaged in “motivating individuals into committing violent attacks across India”.
