The Navy is all set to mark a historic milestone on January 15 as it will commission three advanced frontline combatants at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. The warships include Nilgiri (the first Project 17A stealth frigate), Surat (the final Project 15B stealth destroyer), and Vagsheer (the sixth Scorpene-class submarine).
This landmark event shows India’s growing capabilities in indigenous defence production and its commitment to self-reliance. All three platforms were designed and constructed at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai.
Their commissioning is a testament to India’s expertise in warship and submarine manufacturing, underscoring its global leadership in defence production.
Nilgiri, the lead ship of the Project 17A class, represents a significant advancement over the earlier Shivalik-class frigates. It features enhanced stealth technology, reduced radar visibility, and advanced weapon systems.
Surat, the fourth and final ship of the Project 15B class, builds on the capabilities of the Kolkata-class destroyers, offering improved design and cutting-edge sensors. Both ships were developed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and equipped with domestically made or collaboratively sourced systems.
Both Nilgiri and Surat are designed for multi-role operations and can deploy helicopters like the MH-60R, Sea King, ALH, and Chetak in day or night conditions.
Modern features, including a Rail-Less Helicopter Traversing System and advanced landing aids, enhance their operational versatility. These vessels also include accommodations for women officers and sailors, reflecting the Navy’s commitment to gender inclusion.
Vagsheer, the final submarine of the Scorpene-class under Project 75, is one of the quietest and most versatile diesel-electric submarines globally. Its missions include anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, and special operations.
Armed with wire-guided torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, Vagsheer is also prepared for future upgrades like Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology.
The ships and submarine have undergone extensive sea trials, proving their readiness for deployment. This triple commissioning demonstrates India’s progress in defence manufacturing and bolsters the Navy’s maritime strength.
