Odisha man, out on bail in minor’s rape case, kills and dismembers victim

A man accused of raping a minor girl allegedly killed her, dismembered her body, and scattered the remains across multiple locations in Odisha’s Sundergarh district, police said.

The accused, Kunu Kisan, had been released on bail in a rape case involving the same girl. Police claim he conspired to kill her to avoid conviction. The girl was abducted from Jharsuguda and murdered in Rourkela, according to officials.

“This crime began as a missing person report,” said Himanshu Lal, Inspector General of Police, Western Range. “A report was filed at the Jharsuguda police station, and efforts to trace the girl included uploading her photograph. CCTV footage revealed the accused and the girl together.”

Kisan later confessed to the murder but initially misled investigators about the location of the remains. He first claimed to have dumped the body in the Brahmani River but later admitted to leaving some parts in a mud-filled area near the Hanuman Batika-Tarkera Dam.

Search teams, including the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), recovered a jacket and other evidence. The girl’s dismembered body was discovered in different locations: her lower limbs were found in one spot, while other parts, including her torso, were retrieved from a polythene bag on the Brahmani River’s bank.

“The accused later confessed, saying he planned the murder to avoid conviction under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. After killing her in Rourkela, he cut the body into pieces and dumped them in the river,” Lal explained.

The Jharsuguda police brought Kisan to the riverbank to reconstruct the crime scene. “We have recovered all the body parts. Given the sensitivity of the case, we are pursuing a speedy trial and will ensure the accused receives strict punishment,” Lal added.
