One dead as mob attacks Fifth Indian Reserve Battalion in Manipur’s Imphal

One person was dead, while two others were injured after a mob in Manipur’s Imphal attacked the Fifth Indian Reserve Battalion post in Chingarel Tezpur.

The incident happened at nearly 11 pm on Tuesday.

The victim was identified as 24-year-old Okram Sanaton, a resident of Pangei Okram Leikai in Imphal East, who received bullet injuries in the attack and succumbed.

The other two injured were shifted to a hospital for treatment.

A huge cache of arms and ammunition was said to be looted from the spot, following the incident.

According to police sources, six AK-47 Riffles, four Carbines, three Knot Riffles, and two LMG with heavy ammunition were believed to be looted.

More than 180 people were killed in Manipur since the ethnic violence erupted on May 3 last year after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while tribals, which include Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 per cent and reside mainly in the hill districts.
