During his surprise lunch meeting with eight MPs in Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi revealed that he went to Pakistan in 2015 to meet his then counterpart Nawaz Sharif despite the Special Protection Group (SPG) objecting to his visit, sources told India Today TV on Friday.
As per the source, an MP asked the Prime Minister about his surprise visit to Lahore in 2015 during lunch at the Parliament canteen on Friday.
Narrating about his visit to Pakistan, PM Modi said he was in Parliament till 2 pm that day, after which he left for Afghanistan. On the way back from Afghanistan, he decided to stop over in Pakistan but the SPG declined.
However, PM Modi said he still called Nawaz Sharif to ask if he would receive him. After a go ahead from the then Pakistan PM, PM Modi landed in Pakistan.
PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Lahore came as a surprise to many at the time and coincided with Sharif’s 66th birthday.
A source from Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had said he had invited PM Modi to attend the wedding of his granddaughter, which took place on the same day as the Prime Minister’s visit.
Later, Nawaz Sharif reportedly wore the Rajasthani pink turban gifted to him by PM Modi for his granddaughter’s wedding.
