Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Gulf Spic Labour Camp in Kuwait’s Mina Abdullah area on Saturday, which has a workforce of around 1,500 Indian nationals.
The Prime Minister’s two-day Kuwait visit, the first by an Indian prime minister in 43 years, was at the invitation of Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
He interacted with a cross-section of workers from different states of India at the camp, enquired about their well-being, and also sat at a table with some of them when snacks were served.
PM Modi also addressed a large gathering of the Indian diaspora at an event called ‘Hala Modi’ at the Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Indoor Sports Complex in the city on the first day of his two-day visit.
The Prime Minister invited the Indian diaspora to participate in Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and Maha Kumbh to be held in India in January.
Notably, PM Modi’s visit to Kuwait comes just months after 45 Indians were killed after a fire broke out at a building housing migrant workers in June.
“The visit to the labour camp is symbolic of the importance attached by the Prime Minister to the welfare of Indian workers abroad,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
