The cyber crime branch of the Rajasthan Police warned against fraudsters sending wedding invites to gain access to mobile devices to withdraw money from victims’s accounts.
Director General of Cyber Crime of Rajasthan Police Hemant Priyadarshi told India Today TV that the invites are sent to the people in an APK format and, when downloaded, infect the mobile phones and give full access of the devices to the fraudsters.
“The malicious APK files get installed on the phone automatically and the fraudsters then have access to the personal data and messages,” he said.
The officer explained that fraudsters use the device to transfer money to their accounts by accessing bank OTPs as well.
He advised people to enable two-step verification on their WhatsApp.
“Apart from that, if the APK file gets installed on your phone by mistake, immediately turn off the internet connection. Also, get your bank account frozen as a safety measure,” Priyadarshi said.
He noted that several cases of WhatsApp invite frauds had been reported in Rajasthan over the past few days.
