Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, held a protest march on Saturday to submit a memorandum seeking the immediate intervention of Governor CV Ananda Bose into the violence that erupted in Sandeshkhali. He was accompanied by BJP MLAs as they walked from the Assembly to Raj Bhavan in Kolkata.
However, Adhikari was informed that the Governor was not in Raj Bhavan. The BJP leader then submitted his letter to an officer on special duty.
Violence had erupted in Sandeshkhali on Friday after locals burnt down the poultry farm belonging to absconding Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sheikh Shajahan. He has been absconding since last month after a team of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) that went to raid his house in an alleged ration scam was attacked by a mob.
After the violence in Sandeshkhali, prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC were imposed and internet services suspended in the area.
Suvendu Adhikari tore copies of the order which imposed Section 144 in Sandeshkhali as he came out of Raj Bhavan on Saturday. He said the Governor has time till Sunday to revoke the prohibitory orders.
“We have given time to the Governor till Sunday to revoke the order of Section 144 in Sandeshkhali. Our workers are being arrested under the supervision of West Bengal Police. The Governor was not here, we have given our letter to him to intervene,” said Adhikari.
He added that he will wait for the Governor to act and visit the affected areas or else he, along with all BJP MLAs will march to Sandeshkhali from the Assembly on Monday.
The BJP leader also slammed the ruling Trinamool Congress and called it a “rapist party”, saying it was the only party responsible for the current violence.
“TMC is a rapist party. All BJP leaders have been arrested. No other party has any role in it but the TMC,” said Suvendu Adhikari.
