Sandeshkhali violence: Woman cops team visits village to probe, ban on large gatherings extended


A special ten-member woman police team on Tuesday visited the violence-hit Sandeshkhali village in West Bengal, where women have raised serious allegations of sexual exploitation by Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his aides.

However, not a single woman in the entire village complained of sexual harassment before the team.

Meanwhile, restrictions under Section 144 of the CrPC on and around 500 metres of area in seven gram panchayats, including Sandeshkhali, were extended till February 19. The order, in place since Friday night, prohibits gatherings of five or more persons, with or without weapons.

On Tuesday, tensions escalated in the area after BJP workers clashed with the police over the alleged sexual harassment of women by TMC leaders.
