Sandeshkhali: West Bengal Police vs BJP Amit Malviya over ‘forced detention’ of Sandeshkhali women

BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya on Thursday shared a video, alleging that women in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali who complained against Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shahjahan Sheikh were forcibly taken away by the police. However, the Bengal Police denied his claim, stating that the woman shown in the video was called in a different case.

Malviya shared the video on his X handle and said, “Women of Sandeshkhali, who complained about the tyranny of Shahjahan Sheikh and his men in the region, before the media and the Governor, have been forcibly taken away by WB Police. We have all the details and will ensure they get legal protection. But where is Mamata Banerjee? Why is she hiding behind WB police? The otherwise voluble Mamata has gone silent.”

Malviya was targeting the West Bengal government over reports of sexual exploitation emerging from Sandeshkhali, where a large number of women in Sandeshkhali have claimed that TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh and his “gang” captured swathes of land by force, besides “sexually harassing” them.

Sheikh is absconding since last month after a team of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) that went to raid his house in connection with an alleged ration scam was attacked by a mob.

Responding to Malviya’s tweet, the Bengal Police said the claims made by the BJP leader were “falsehood”.

“Falsehood at its most shameful! A video was posted today by @amitmalviya, claiming that a few women from Sandeshkhali have been forcibly taken away by the police. Nothing can be farther from truth (sic),” the Bengal Police said in a series of posts on X.

“The facts are, a lady named Rekha Patra, a resident of Sandeshkhali, had gone along with 4 other local ladies to depose before the Ld magistrate of Basirhat court in connection with a case, in which she is the complainant. The I.O of the case had escorted them to the court to ensure their safety and security,” the police said.

The police also shared a video showing the woman speaking in Bangla about the case she is involved in.

“Strict legal action is being initiated against such deliberate falsehood with the blatantly ulterior motive of maligning the police,” the police tweet read.
