The seer of Sri Pejawar Mutt in Karnataka, has refuted claims that he called for changes to the Indian Constitution, stating his remarks were “misquoted” by the media. Addressing reporters on Sunday, Sri Vishwaprasanna Theertha Swamiji expressed disappointment over what he termed “misinformation” and criticised Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for fuelling unnecessary confusion with his comments on the issue.
The controversy stems from the seer’s speech at a “Saints’ Conference” organised by the Karnataka Vishwa Hindu Parishad in Bengaluru on November 23. During the event, he was reported to have advocated for a Constitution that reflects the interests of the majority. Siddaramaiah interpreted this as a call for constitutional change, sparking a debate.
Clarifying his stance, the seer said, “I respect the Constitution and have never supported any initiative against its spirit. The memorandum submitted to Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot after the conference made no mention of changes to the Constitution.” He urged the media to ensure accuracy when reporting statements to prevent unnecessary controversies.
He further criticised Siddaramaiah, asserting that as Chief Minister, he should act responsibly. “I only demanded that governments be inclusive and treat all citizens equally. Minority appeasement must stop,” he said. He also alleged that certain groups are targeting him due to his support for Hindu causes but declared, “No one can suppress the voice of Hindus.”
