The Trinamool Congress on Tuesday approached the Election Commission alleging Model Code of Conduct (MCC) violation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP. Besides, the TMC also accused the poll panel of not acting on its previous complaints.
“I am writing to bring to your attention a matter of utmost concern regarding the flagrant violations of the MCC by the BJP during the ongoing electoral process. The BJP, one of the political parties involved in the creation of the MCC, is now brazenly flouting it. It is disturbing to note that this flouting of the MCC by the Prime Minister himself is emboldening others in the BJP to do so with disdain,” reads the letter submitted by the ruling party of West Bengal.
The letter also states that the TMC wrote to the Election Commission thrice over such violations but got no response. “No visible action has also been taken on the same,” the letter stated.
TMC leaders Sagarika Ghose and Saket Gokhale submitted a letter to the poll body and spoke to the media afterwards. They attacked PM Modi for his remarks made at a rally in Rajasthan.
“Four phases of elections have passed. The TMC and many other opposition parties have complained against BJP and PM Modi but the EC is sitting on these complaints. Not a single complaint against the PM and BJP is acted upon,” Saket Gokhale told India Today TV.
“The Model Code of Conduct has turned into a joke. Now it is the Modi Code of Conduct”, the TMC MP added.
The TMC’s letter to the Election Commission outlines specific instances of alleged violations by the BJP, including false and malicious allegations and appeals for votes based on religion. It alleges that the Prime Minister made divisive statements in his rallies.
