Amethi has been a Congress bastion since its formation in 1967. Barring the last four years, some years in the 1970s and the late 1990s, the constituency has always voted either for the Nehru-Gandhi family or a loyalist.
Amethi always remained loyal to the Gandhi family, but the fortress came tumbling down in 2019, when BJP’s Smriti Irani defeated the Congress chief and sitting MP Rahul Gandhi by a margin of 55,120 votes.
India Today’s special show ‘Tryst with Gandhis’ brings you the history of the Gandhi family bastion and a timeline of how Congress fortress came tumbling down in 2019.
