Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government over its handling of the cyclone Fengal, accusing it of providing only temporary relief without addressing long-term solutions.
In a social media post, Vijay criticized the government for turning disaster relief into a “ceremonial ritual,” where leaders visit flood-affected areas, distribute aid, and take photographs, only to abandon the people once the media attention fades. He alleged that the government failed to implement even basic precautionary measures despite repeated warnings of heavy rains and floods.
“The ruling dispensation forgets its primary responsibility of ensuring the safety of its people during natural disasters,” Vijay said. “Meeting people for a day or two and offering temporary solutions is not enough. Long-term measures for disaster preparedness and climate change mitigation are essential.”
He also accused the DMK government of politicising criticism by labelling dissenters as anti-government or “saffronizing” their intentions. “The government believes it can escape accountability by criticising the opposition. But history has shown that rulers who deceive the people do not last,” he said.
Vijay urged TVK cadres in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to continue providing essential relief, such as food, drinking water, and groceries, to flood-hit areas. He praised their ongoing efforts and called for them to remain vigilant and prioritise their safety as the Meteorological Department continues to issue warnings of heavy rain.
“Till the floodwaters recede and normalcy returns, our comrades must stand by the people. Let’s work together to remove their suffering,” Vijay said.
