Tyson Fury was not impressed with the new AI judge’s scorecard for his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk on Saturday night.
The ‘Gypsy King’ was defeated by unanimous decision as the heavyweight duo competed for a second time on Saturday night in Riyadh. All three judges scored the fight 116-112, or in layman’s terms 8-4 in favor of the former cruiserweight champion.
However, there was also an experiment being run by boxing supremo Turki Alalshikh to introduce an AI judge. The scorecard that was handed in wasn’t official in any capacity and didn’t impact the result, perhaps luckily as it gave a very wide card.
Even the official scorecards for Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury’s rematch that read 116-112 proved controversial with some fans. So when the new AI judge gave Usyk a whopping 118-112, marking two tied rounds and just two in Fury’s favor, fans were left with raised eyebrows.
When the card made its way to social media, viewers were quick to criticize, with one fan writing: “AI is going to need a little more work.” YouTube star KSI, who fought Tyson’s brother Tommy Fury in a Misfits Boxing fight last year, also joked that it might have been beneficial when they competed.
Their clash ended in controversy as Fury took the decision on all three scorecards after a dreadful six round affair that was near-impossible to score. KSI appealed the decision, but was rejected. Following the fight on Saturday, he tweeted: “AI judge would have given me the win against Tommy Fury.”
When the scorecard made its way to Tyson Fury himself, he was not pleased with what he heard. He noted that theres no need to take jobs from human beings in favor of Artificial Intelligence, particularly if it can get scores so wrong.
“By the review of that, absolutely s***,” he told the media of the scorecard during his post-fight press conference. “Here’s one, f*** all the computers, keep the humans going. More jobs for humans, less jobs for computers.”
He also aimed a jab at a certain brand of vehicle during his aggressive tirade, adding: “And f*** electric cars too while we’re at it.”
