An anti-corruption team was on Sunday assaulted by a group of revenue clerks in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki after these government employees were earlier caught by officials accepting bribes, police said. The officers were attacked while they were keeping an eye on some revenue clerks who were taking bribes.
The matter escalated when anti-corruption team officers recently arrested two revenue clerks and a clerical assistant based on a complaint from a farmer. Officials had also arrested some revenue clerks on charges of bribery.
Anti-corruption officers had received another complaint of some revenue clerks taking bribes. On December 17, as the officers were keeping an eye on them, a group of revenue clerks attacked the anti-corruption team and vandalised their vehicle, police said.
Visuals from the site showed police arriving at the spot and whisking away a man having a bloodied face. During the assault, the complainant farmer also suffered injuries and the police also took him away from the site.
Following the incident, the revenue clerks gathered at a police station and alleged indecency by the anti-corruption team. While the farmer and Virendra of the anti-corruption team filed a complaint against the revenue clerks, a woman revenue clerk filed a counter complaint against the anti-corruption team over the incident.
“On December 17, an anti-corruption team in Ayodhya caught some revenue clerks taking bribes and got a case registered. Eight to ten of them misbehaved with the anti-corruption officers. They assaulted the anti-corruption officers while taking them. A woman revenue clerk also filed a complaint against anti-corruption officers,” Barabanki ASP Akhilesh Narayan Singh said.
“We are analysing the CCTV footage. We are further investigating the matter,” he added.
